Always another way... The Black Dog
The swamp didn't seem it's usual gray, drab self that day. Black should have known it was up to something sinister. Magic as old as that in the swamp couldn't be trusted or relied upon, it was completely illogical to call the swamp normal in any case.
Still, he should have known, after all his time stalking around in it. Because of his lack of vigilance, he was now standing completely dumbstruck, belly deep in water, in front of the portal unfolding neatly out of the edges of reality in front of him. His mind would have already snapped and he would be off in wonderland if it wasn't for the cold recognition deep in his soul. He considered the situation carefully as the portal blossomed fully, ripping a savage hole through time and space. He shivered and started to back away slowly, knowing that full flight could land him in some otherworldly dimension.
A voice sprang forth from the portal, cold as ice and ringing with a chilling growl that stopped Black in his tracks.
"Hello, my old enemy.." The Ice Lord said, making Black's blood run cold. He blinked in confusion, his blind gaze wide with shock.
"I.." He stuttered, not quite getting the words out.
"Killed me? You're a fool if you believe that." Ice said malevolently. Black could more than imagine the evil smirk on the wolf's maw.
"But..." He said again, still confused.
"Blithering idiot." Ice spat, obviously dissapointed. "What happened to my old nemesis, hmm? Lost your backbone? Lost you mind? My," he paused, surveying Black's scrambled thoughts, "I wonder who finally did it. The portal was gone with a snap of dimensional space, leaving Black barely hanging onto his sanity.
